The Ties That Bind Poles: a Phone Cord
Telephones--not the fate of the children--discourage many Polish couples from seeking a divorce, the government newspaper Rzeczpospolita said today.
The dilemma is that with telephones still in such heavy demand in Poland that one spouse stands to lose access to this means of communication for years unless the couple stays together.
About 2 million people are facing a wait of up to 25 years for a telphone.
The paper said those who lose the telephones after a divorce are in most cases women because current laws generally give custody of the telephone to the person in whose name it is registered, usually the husband.
