WORLD : Dispute Grows in 2 Baltic States
Soviet troops guarded two Communist Party buildings in Lithuania and ordered a Latvian printing plant returned to the party today in a growing dispute over who controls facilities in the two restive Baltic republics.
“There are nasty divorce proceedings going on,” said Andrei Lyackov, a senior researcher at the Lithuanian Information Institute. “It’s quite a dreadful situation.” Both republics have demanded independence from Moscow.
The Lithuanian Communist Party, which is loyal to Moscow, is fighting to retain control of the party’s Central Committee building and the Institute of Party History. The republic’s non-Communist government wants to give independent groups greater access to party property.
