Festival of Animation

Seventeen films from around the world will be featured in the 1991 Festival of Animation at the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla, beginning Friday and running through April 28.

Festival creators Spike Decker and Mike Gribble say there won’t be any Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the lineup, but they do promise a variety of types of animation as well as appearances by many of the featured animators.

Films from 11 countries, including Bulgaria, Japan, Soviet Union, Canada and the United States will be featured. This year’s festival highlight is the 1989 Academy Award winner “Balance,” the story about the nature of greed set with a haunting soundtrack created by German brothers Christoph and Wolfgang Lauenstein.

Other celebrated works include the Japanese film, “Tarzan,” and “Denny Goes Airsurfing,” the story about a way-cool surfer dude created by American Lance Kramer.
