German Drug Firms Approve Subsidies: To ease the anguish of those unable to get medicines because of their high costs, drug firms in western Germany have agreed to heavily discount drugs sold in the former East Germany. Labor Minister Norbert Bluem said the drug industry will agree to forgo $1.5 billion in profit through 1993 so that low-paid people in the once-Communist part of the country can buy medicines at a 55% discount temporarily. When the two Germanys agreed to unite last year, the unification treaty specified that there be temporary drug discounts to ease the East Germans’ transition to western prices and market conditions.
