Eugenics and Nancy Cruzan

Share

I read your editorial “Vital Legacy of Nancy Cruzan” (Dec. 22) with awe. How frightened must those be who are in wheelchairs or disabled, whether slightly or severely. Or perhaps they do not see themselves as targets, for we all scoff at the idea that tragedy will happen to us.

As David Shaw so aptly pointed out in his articles on abortion and the media last year, the press does not relate both sides on such controversial issues as abortion and euthanasia. Nancy Cruzan was not terminally ill, she was not in a coma and she was not in any pain. Those who cared for her claimed she responded to them. I never read these facts in a newspaper.

To judge who should live and who should die is not a function of the media.
