Women in Combat

Re: David H. Siegel’s suggestion that women should be required to fight alongside men (letter, Dec. 20):

It is men who are the presidents, the secretaries of state, the generals, etc., etc. It is men who have made the mess the world is in, Margaret Thatcher notwithstanding. Perhaps if women had been running things for the past thousands of years, priorities would have been different . . . children, education, social services for example, instead of tanks, bombs and poison gas. Until women are represented in the positions that make the big decisions, they should be in the armed services only by choice.
