Storms brought rain, up to a foot of snow and sleet to parts of the nation today after stopping the mail in St. Louis and icing a hill in Spokane, Wash., so thoroughly that it was declared off limits for sledding.

The storms relented in hard-hit parts of Washington and in Kansas City, Mo., today, but freezing rain continued in Iowa and Missouri, snow fell in Minnesota and Idaho and more rain drenched the Carolinas, Arkansas and Oregon.

Up to 10 inches of rain caused flooding in coastal Mississippi, and officials estimated that 300 people were forced from their homes.
