Youth Facilities Needed

Share

After reading the article, “Building Decay Could KO Youth Club” in the Ventura County Edition of The Times on Jan. 3, I was very disturbed about the lack of support and concern that the city of Oxnard officials have given to the Boxing Club in La Colonia and general condition of La Colonia itself.

I was born and raised in La Colonia, and as long as I can remember the Colonia Boxing Gym and all other youth facilities have been in poor condition and there has always existed within the city officials a great lack of sensitivity for our young people.

It saddens me to see politicians like Councilman Manuel Lopez and Mayor Nao Takasugi making themselves present in La Colonia during election time, trying to get the Latino vote. Yet after the elections, these and other candidates are nowhere in sight to improve La Colonia and existing youth facilities.

If we are truly concerned about helping our young people become someone in life, then we as a community--together with the city officials--must make it our priority to improve and even create new facilities for our young people.
