County Delays Vote on Sylmar Business Park

Share

Los Angeles County supervisors Tuesday postponed for two weeks a decision on a proposal to erect a large business park on county-owned land in Sylmar. The supervisors acted at the request of Supervisor Ed Edelman, who said he needs time to learn about the area, which was recently added to his district.

Edelman said he does not necessarily oppose the plan, which has been praised by county administrators as lucrative and scorned by neighbors as ludicrous.

“I haven’t even been out there,” said Edelman, who became the area’s supervisor under court-ordered redistricting. “I’d like to see it before I vote.”

Through a proposed 66-year lease arrangement on the land, the county hopes to gain a total of $260 million in rents and profit-sharing.

Neighbors say there are already too many business parks in Sylmar.

The 37 acres are a small part of nearly 600 surplus county-owned acres near Olive View Medical Center. Since the hospital opened in 1987, there has been increasing pressure to develop the excess land.
