Macario S. Bautista; Retired Bartender

Macario S. Bautista, who worked as a bartender at the Lakeside Country Club for 25 years, has died at his Van Nuys home. He was 83.

Bautista died Monday of natural causes, said his grandson, Gilbert E. Bautista.

Born May 11, 1907, in La Union, the Philippines, Bautista came to the United States when he was 17 and worked as a busboy at country clubs and hotels in Santa Barbara where, despite Prohibition, he learned to tend bar, his grandson said.

In 1947, he moved to the San Fernando Valley and began working as a bartender at the Lakeside Country Club in Toluca Lake. He remained at Lakeside until his retirement in 1972.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Hortencia Bautista of Van Nuys; son Gilbert O. Bautista of Van Nuys; 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is planned from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a rosary to be recited at 7, both at Pierce Brothers Meyer-Mitchell Mortuary, 5940 Van Nuys Blvd. in Van Nuys.

A funeral Mass is to be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Elisabeth Catholic Church, 6628 Cedros Ave. in Van Nuys.

Burial will follow at San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills. Praiswater Funeral Home in Van Nuys is handling the arrangements.
