Record Soviet Corn Purchase: The Soviet Union, acting one day after it secured a credit agreement with the United States, bought 3.72 million metric tons of U.S. corn--the largest corn sale ever, the Agriculture Department said. Exporters also reported selling 550,000 tons of soybean meal to the Kremlin. Based on Chicago prices, the sales were worth nearly $541 million. The soybean meal was worth about $100 million, with the corn worth $339.7 million.
