P.M. BRIEFING : Smoke Cartons to Display Skulls
Drawings of skulls and stories of smokers who died will be printed on cigarette cartons next year, an official of the National Board of Health and Welfare said today. “It’s difficult to transform medical science to intelligible language to make people understand the health hazards of tobacco,” Margareta Haglund said.
Swedish cigarette packs at present carry a brief health warning in small type. There is no warning on cigarette cartons. The board is the government’s policy-making body for a wide range of social issues.
The tobacco industry can appeal the board’s plan.
