The Region : 1.2% Water Rate Increase Affects 4 Southeast Cities

Water rates for 44,000 customers of the San Gabriel Valley Water Co. will increase this month by a modest 1.2%--a smaller hike than expected because of a surprise reduction in the cost of water.

The average bills sent to customers in 11 cities, including four in the Southeast, and unincorporated parts of Los Angeles County will increase by only 36 cents a month, company officials said. The new average monthly bill will be $23.22.

Originally, the El Monte-based company planned to raise its rates 5.6%, but found that the smaller increase was sufficient when the price of water dropped last year, company President M.L. Whitehead said.

The affected Southeast-area consumers are in Montebello, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs and Whittier.
