Mary L. Springer; Librarian

Mary L. Springer, head librarian at San Fernando High School for about 50 years, has died at her San Fernando home. She was 87.

Miss Springer died Dec. 28 of heart failure, said longtime friend Michael Sagor.

Born July 7, 1903, in Decatur, Iowa, she came to California as a teen-ager and graduated from UC Berkeley in the early 1920s. Soon afterward, she started working as a librarian at San Fernando High School, where she enjoyed helping students with term papers. She retired in 1973 as head librarian and worked until her death as a part-time librarian at the Los Angeles City Library branches in Sylmar, Pacoima and North Hollywood. Miss Springer, who spoke fluent Spanish, French and German, was a charter member of San Fernando chapter of PEO Sisterhood and belonged to the Phi Beta Kappa honorary society.

She has no survivors.

A funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church of San Fernando, 1102 4th St. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park-Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive. Forest Lawn is handling the arrangements. Donations may be made in Miss Springer’s name to the Let God Love You radio program, which is affiliated with First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, P.O.
