Skinned: If she had more hair, it would be standing up on the back of her neck. Rock star Sinead O’Connor on Wednesday topped Mr. Blackwell’s list of worst-dressed women when he called her the “bald-headed banshee of MTV.” Other fashion frumps included socialite Ivana Trump (“a cross between Brigitte Bardot and Lassie”), Glenn Close, Queen Elizabeth II, Julia Roberts, Carrie Fisher, Kim Basinger, Laura Dern, Kathy Bates and Barbra Streisand. The fashion industry also got cut up: “It isn’t bad enough the stuff they sell, but even shoplifting is down.”

Marked: As a little girl, feminist Gloria Steinem squirmed uncomfortably in her seat in the movies when movie sex goddesses had to “totally surrender” to their leading men. “Watching versions of this scene in Saturday matinees,” she writes in Ms. magazine, “I remember feeling betrayed. By the time I was a teen-ager, I had accepted this movie ritual as adult reality.”

Voices Up: Richard Nixon was serenaded cross-country on his 78th birthday Wednesday by 300 schoolchildren gathered inside his presidential library in his hometown of Yorba Linda. Nixon was in David and Julie Nixon Eisenhower’s home in Pennsylvania with his wife, Pat, and their grandchildren. Nixon said the children’s version of “God Bless America,” his favorite song, was the best he’d ever heard.

Hospital Report: Former House speaker Thomas (Tip) O’Neill is in serious but improving condition in Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he is being treated for pneumonia. His daughter, Susan O’Neill, said she expects him to be released in a few days. She said the 78-year-old Massachusetts Democrat “has been in great shape. I played golf with him over the Christmas vacation.”
