The United States has officially closed its embassy in Somalia, where civil war has resulted in chaos and widespread deaths in the last two weeks. The State Department announced the closure after evacuating all of its remaining staff--37 people--in a daring helicopter operation a week ago. Also airlifted from the seaside embassy compound in the capital, Mogadishu, were the Soviet envoy, his staff and other foreigners.
