CONEJO VALLEY : Parents to Receive Anti-Drug Booklet

Share

Volunteers for the California “Hugs Not Drugs” project are launching a campaign to distribute a drug-awareness workbook to parents in the Conejo Valley.

According to coordinator Paul Schmidt of Simi Valley, project representatives last week began asking local businesses to advertise in the booklet, which will be distributed to parents with elementary school children later this year.

“The real power of this book is getting kids and parents discussing drugs,” Schmidt said.

“We are trying to give parents the skills they need and an agenda. . . . for talking to children about substance abuse.”

After the booklets are distributed to the Conejo Valley parents, project officials will start a countywide campaign to give the booklets to about 50,000 parents countywide.

According to Schmidt, the National Institute on Drug Abuse says children who can talk with their parents about drugs and alcohol are substantially less likely to become abusers.
