COUNTYWIDE : 2 Cancer Centers Win Recognition
Two Orange County cancer centers have been recognized for their commitment to fighting the disease.
The American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer has given Hoag Cancer Center its Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program designation.
The designation means that the facility offers a broad spectrum of cancer care and that it meets strict clinical, education and reporting requirements, among them maintaining a tumor registry. The center, in Newport Beach, was founded in 1977 and treats more than 1,000 new cancer patients a year.
At the UC Irvine Clinical Cancer Center in Orange, Dr. Frank L. Meyskens Jr., oncologist and co-director, was recently named to the 1991 Scientific Advisory Board of the International Council for Coordinating Cancer Research.
The council, which began in 1938, is a nonprofit organization that promotes collaboration among cancer research scientists internationally. The focus for the council for the next two years will be on cancer prevention.
Meyskens is chief of hematology/oncology at UC Irvine Medical Center. He is internationally known for his research in cancer prevention.
