City Council Condemns Use of Force in Lithuania

Share

The Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to condemn Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev’s use of military might against the rebel Baltic republic of Lithuania.

The resolution “condemning the use of force against the governments of Lithuania, Latvia or Estonia” passed 13 to 0, drawing applause from about 40 Lithuanian-Americans who requested the action.

The resolution echoed a U.S. Senate proclamation Monday that denounced Sunday’s seizure by Soviet soldiers of the Lithuanian television center in the capital city of Vilnius. At least 14 civilians were killed.

Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores agreed to support the resolution, but expressed concern that its introduction after the final agenda was published went against council rules requiring 72-hour advance notice of such measures.
