Dr. Richard T. Cowen; Dentist
Dr. Richard T. Cowen, who practiced general dentistry in Arleta for 36 years, has died at a Los Angeles hospital. He was 66.
A longtime resident of Sepulveda, Cowen died Friday following recent heart bypass surgery, said his daughter, Nancy Cowen Pollock.
Born May 28, 1924, in Cleveland, he graduated from Case Western Reserve University Dental School in Cleveland in 1948. Cowen practiced dentistry in Cleveland prior to serving as an oral surgeon in the Air Force during the Korean War. After he was discharged, he moved to California and opened a dental office in Arleta, where he practiced general dentistry until recently.
Cowen was a member of the American Dental Assn. and several of its local chapters, in addition to the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity. In 1966-67, he served as president of the Rotary Club in Panorama City and was active with Boy Scout Troop 165 in Sepulveda from the late 1960s to early 1970s.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Judith Cowen of Sepulveda; son Barry Cowen of Santa Cruz; daughter Nancy Cowen Pollock of Gainesville, Fla.; brother Robert S. Cowen of Los Angeles; and a grandson.
A funeral was held Monday, with burial at Mount Sinai Memorial Park in Los Angeles.
Donations can be made in Cowen’s name to the American Heart Assn. or the American Cancer Society.
