Bear Stearns Cos.: The New York-based brokerage’s second-quarter earnings fell 72% from the prior year to $16.9 million. Revenue totaled $586.7 million, up slightly. The firm said its commissions and investment banking activity remained low during the quarter, an indication of the continuing drop in business on Wall Street.
