C. Edward Fischer, who 13 years ago wrote a pamphlet titled “How to Live to Be 100 Years of Age,” is dead--at the age of 100.

Fischer’s 1978 pamphlet outlined a series of simple exercises to improve the circulatory system. Fischer, who performed the exercises for more than 75 years, also recommended moderation in eating, drinking and other activities.

“He was a remarkable guy,” said a friend, Jerry Hurter.

Hurter said Fischer, who died Thursday of undisclosed causes, had been near death in 1974 when he suffered an illness that left him in a coma for five weeks.

Friends and relatives had given up hope of Fischer’s survival, but one day Hurter’s wife felt him exert a small pressure on her hand, Hurter said.

“She knew he was alive and he survived,” Hurter said.

Fischer, a former bank examiner for the Federal Reserve system, celebrated his 100th birthday July 23.
