Operation Rescue Under Fire

It is apparent that the people who harassed Nancy Cruzan’s family and others in their time of agony are concerned with causes and not with human beings (“The Right to Live or to Die,” Jan. 10). Only cruel and vicious people could subject the families of the dying to the torture that these people have inflicted.

The position of Operation Rescue and Right-to-Life is flawed in two major ways. First, dying is not an event but a process. There is no way that Nancy Cruzan’s life could have been saved because it was already over--the process of dying had gone too far to be reversed.

Second, every competent person has the right to refuse or stop medical treatment for any reason. When a person is not competent to make such decisions, someone else has to make them. It is ludicrous to suggest that an organization that has no connection with the dying person or his family can make better or morally superior decisions.
