GM Halving Production at Kansas City Plant: United Auto Workers union officials said General Motors Corp. plans to eliminate one of the two production shifts at its Fairfax car assembly plant. The UAW officials said workers were given a statement saying the second shift would be dropped effective April 2. Some said as many as 1,000 hourly employees could lose their jobs. The plant is the only one that produces the Pontiac Grand Prix and has the capacity to produce 250,000 cars a year. Separately, Ford Motor Co. said production of Ford Thunderbirds and Mercury Cougars at its Lorain, Ohio, plant would be trimmed to 54 from 70 an hour beginning March 25. That will result in the indefinite layoffs of about 500 workers.
