General Dynamics to Cut Jobs in San Diego: In a cost-cutting measure, General Dynamics said it will cut 500 jobs, or 10%, from the payroll at its Space Systems division during the next year. Virtually all of the jobs to be cut are in San Diego, the company said. The division, which cut 117 jobs in 1990, makes Atlas missiles that it sells to the U.S. military and to private customers. General Dynamics Space Systems division has a backlog of 10 orders for Atlas rockets from military customers and 24 orders from commercial clients. The job cuts are not in response to any loss of business or program cutbacks, a General Dynamics spokesperson said. The move is part of a general belt-tightening by the company, which is primarily a defense contractor, in response to growing federal budgetary constraints.
