Norwalk : Shelter for Homeless Asks Cities for More in Grants
The Rio Hondo Temporary Home, a shelter for homeless families, has asked several area cities for tens of thousands of dollars in additional grants to help it survive a funding shortfall.
The shelter, which is at Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, is partly funded through a consortium of local cities: Downey, La Mirada, Norwalk, Pico Rivera, Santa Fe Springs and Whittier.
Shelter Director Barbara E. McMahon said the shelter must rely more on the cities because she and her staff have been unable to raise as much money as expected from the community. She is asking each of the cities to contribute a total of $50,000 for the year. Norwalk, for example, has contributed $21,000 and is being asked to donate $29,000 more, McMahon said.
If the cities decide to contribute that amount, they would provide 48% of the $625,000 in income shelter officials hope to generate this year, McMahon said.
