Downey : Budget to Be Cut Through Hiring Freeze, Overtime Ban

Share

The City Council has voted to reduce city spending by $238,000 this year by imposing a hiring freeze and eliminating non-emergency overtime pay.

Sales of automobiles and other goods in Downey have slumped in recent months, which means the city will receive $500,000 to $900,000 less than expected in sales tax revenue, Assistant City Manager Lee Powell said.

The council action also cuts out purchases of new equipment and reduces the amount of money city officials will be allowed to spend on travel this fiscal year, which ends June 30.
