A San Pedro woman who vanished last week while on her way to buy a yellow ribbon as a sign of support for her brother in the Persian Gulf returned home Wednesday and told police that she had been kidnaped by her estranged husband.

Vai Sili Fetuli, 35, was booked on suspicion of kidnaping Mary Jane Fetuli, 29, after she left her job at a Torrance department store to run the errand on Jan. 16. When she failed to return, Fetuli’s co-workers contacted police.

Vai Fetuli abducted his wife at knifepoint, apparently just outside a crafts store, Torrance Police Lt. Walter Murker said. He then forced her to drive with him to Nevada, Arizona, Colorado and Utah over the next several days, Murker said. Eventually, they returned to Torrance and checked into the Palm Motel on Pacific Coast Highway. Mary Jane Fetuli fled the motel room about 3 a.m. and returned to San Pedro to call police.
