La Verne : Initiative to Block Cinema

Share

Angry about a proposal to build a 12-screen, 2,950-seat movie theater, the Small Town Preservation Committee has collected enough signatures to place on the ballot an initiative outlawing construction of facilities for the assembly of more than 1,000 people.

Unless the City Council adopts the thousand-seat limit itself, the measure will appear on the April, 1992, La Verne municipal ballot. But even if the measure passes, it will have no effect on the 12-screen project if Edwards Theaters Circuit Inc. obtains city approval and begins construction before the election, City Manager Martin R. Lomeli said.

The City Council on Monday authorized a study of the ballot measure’s potential effects on the city.

Also on Monday, the city’s Development Review Committee approved plans for the proposed Edwards project. The decision will be reviewed by the council Feb. 4.
