Battleship Wisconsin

Share

The Wisconsin, one of the largest warships in the gulf, has been central to the Allied naval contingent. It has fired a steady flow of Tomahawk missiles at targets inside Iraq and Kuwait since the war began. Launched in 1943, the Wisconsin saw action in the South Pacific during World War II and again in the Korean War. Mothballed in 1958, it was recommissioned in 1988. The 57,000-ton vessel has up to 19 inches of forged steel in some places, designed to withstand a hit from an anti-ship missile.

* Crew: More than 1,500 * Missiles: 32 Tomahawk cruise missiles * Guns: Three 16-inch gun turrets with 66-foot long barrels * Shells: A one-ton weight; range of more than 20 miles.
