A new state report says Sacramento leads the state in the incidence of most major types of cancer and that Los Angeles has the lowest cancer rates among California’s five most populous regions.

The Sacramento Bee reported today that the report by the state Department of Health Services also shows that Sacramento by far has the highest lung cancer incidence, more than 21% above the state average.

The newspaper said it obtained an advance copy of the report, which is scheduled for release next month.

The study tracked 38 kinds of cancer over a four-year period. The report shows that Sacramento has the highest rates in the state for seven of the nine major cancers.

Researchers said they were unsure why Sacramento showed such a high cancer incidence.

The report also shows that the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area has the highest overall total for all the 38 cancers tracked by the California Tumor Registry, a section of the state Department of Health Services.

The report also notes that Los Angeles showed an incidence rate of 50.8 cases per 100,000 residents, lower than all other regions listed and below the state average of 56.7.
