Uwe-Jens Mey of Germany dominated the sprint events of the World Cup speedskating championships at Innsbruck, Austria.

Mey began the day with an easy victory over 500 meters in 37.41 seconds, beating runner-up Roger Stroem of Norway by 60/100ths of a second. Olaf Zinke, another German, was third in 38.30.

Then Mey won the 1,000 meters in 1:15.67, a track record. Canada’s Sean Ireland was a distant second in 1:16.98 and Zinke third in 1:17.10.

Mey’s victory in the 500 meters increased his lead in the World Cup standings to 150-117 over Toshiyki Kuroiwa of Japan. In the 1,000 meters, Igor Shelesovski of the Soviet Union leads the World Cup standings with 120 points. Kuroiwa is second with 92.

Johan-Olav Koss, Norway’s all-round world champion and European champion, set a track record in winning the 5,000 meters in 6:55.13. Leo Visser of the Netherlands finished second in 6:57.28 and countryman Bart Veldkamp was third in 7:02.06.

Koss leads the overall World Cup standings with 91 points. Ben van der Burg of the Netherlands is second with 81 and Visser third with 71.
