Debating U.S. Involvement in Gulf Conflict

Your arguments about why the coalition would not break up over an Israeli response are interesting (editorial, “The Politics of Any Israeli Retaliation,” Jan. 19). I wonder, however, if you aren’t just a little bit overconfident in your rational analysis. Sometimes people don’t do what is rational. A lot of people still seem to be surprised at Hussein’s apparent lack of rationality.

It might not take much to trigger the religious element in Saudi Arabia to force the Saudi kingdom to eject the infidels or to overthrow the kingdom. What would it take the masses of underprivileged in Egypt to find a hero who would overthrow the current government and support Hussein? Many of the poor undoubtedly see Hussein as a hero who will redistribute the oil wealth to all Arabs.
