Heavy Fog Causes Series of Auto Crashes in Indiana

Heavy fog forced the closure of an eastbound section of Interstate 74 in Indiana after about 30 cars piled up Monday, but there were no serious injuries, police in Shelby County said.

A highway near Anderson, Ind., also was closed because of a series of accidents, mostly fender-benders, involving 30 to 50 cars, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.

Dense fog and ice also caused a 15-vehicle pileup on Interstate 65 in the state, resulting in only one injury.

Emergency vehicles swarmed to the scene, but motorists had trouble seeing even their flashing red-and-blue lights until it was almost too late.

Fog had settled across many central U.S. cities, including Indianapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, St. Louis and Louisville, Ky.

Wintry weather swept across the Midwest early Monday as a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain made its way toward the East Coast.

Forecasters posted an overnight winter weather advisory for central Ohio, where snow and sleet were falling.
