Sri Lanka Is Said to Have Rejected Two U.S. Warships
Two U.S. warships apparently en route to the Persian Gulf were denied berthing facilities in Sri Lanka, and one docked in the Indian port of Bombay, sources said Wednesday.
The Ford, a guided missile frigate, and another unidentified U.S. warship arrived at Colombo’s port Jan. 20 but were turned away, shipping sources in Colombo said. They spoke on condition of anonymity.
The Indian and Sri Lankan policy is to refuse docking facilities to warships with nuclear weapons. It was not known if the Ford was armed with such weapons.
