Florida began cracking down on gun purchases today with buyers required to show a photo ID and wait while their names are run through state and federal crime computers.

The program isn’t a cure-all but is better than the previous “lie and buy” system, said Tim Moore, commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Florida has been a source of firearms smuggled elsewhere for criminals and revolutionaries. Of the 135 weapons confiscated in Trinidad after a revolt failed last year, 105 were traced to purchases at gun shows and shops in Florida by one man, said Joe Vince, assistant special agent in charge of the Miami office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
