Sale of Mexico’s State-Run TV Channel Halted: President Carlos Salinas de Gortari halted the sale after moves to privatize it prompted an outcry from artists and intellectuals. Channel 22, for years an outlet for classic films, documentaries and other cultural programming in a country swamped by the commercial TV giant Televisa, will remain in the hands of the government’s Imevision station, a statement from Salinas’ office said. It said the decision followed publication of a letter last weekend, signed by hundreds of luminaries including novelist Carlos Fuentes and painter Rufino Tamayo, saying the sale might be good for private competition but would weaken public interest television.
