Chile to Ban German Religious Colony
SANTIAGO, Chile — The government said Friday that it would cancel authorization for a controversial German religious colony to continue functioning in Chile.
Left-wing legislators and human rights groups allege that the grounds of the community, known as the Educational and Beneficial Dignity Society, served as a torture center during the former military dictatorship of Gen. Augosto Pinochet.
The closing of the colony, which is not backed by the German government and which has been criticized for the lifestyle of its inhabitants, was announced by Interior Subsecretary Belisario Velasco.
