The leader of the Irish Republican Army’s political wing quashed speculation about an imminent cease-fire as protesters called for an end to the guerrilla conflicts. The protest was staged outside the annual congress of Sinn Fein in Dublin. Gerry Adams, president of Sinn Fein, dismissed press reports that he was working on a cease-fire plan, telling the congress: “If these issues were not so serious, those fictitious accounts could be ignored. Indeed they might even be the source of some amusement.” About 400 protesters picketed the Sinn Fein conference, waving “Stop the Killing” placards.
