Hernandez reports that Archbishop Roger M. Mahony can’t be expected to espouse breaking the law. Not true. Mahony has been a vocal and conspicuous supporter of Operation Rescue, a group that breaks the law trying to prevent women from entering health-care clinics. Apparently, breaking the law to oppress women is acceptable to Mahony; breaking the law to rescue women and men from murderous regimes in Central America is considered by him to be immoral.
Father Olivares’ courageous work on the behalf of the poor and the powerless should inspire better journalism.
