FATHER OLIVARES
Regarding “The Last Fight of Father Olivares,” by Marita Hernandez (Dec. 16): Some of the critics of Father Luis Olivares accuse him of doing good works for less than altruistic reasons. They say he wanted recognition, adulation; that he was a vain man seeking power and glory; that by championing the causes he did, he became a public figure--the celebrity he yearned to be.
Does it matter? He fed the hungry, sheltered the homeless, and through his efforts the poor and despairing gained a measure of control over their lives.
How many of us have done as much--for any reason?
