WORLD : Car Bomb Damages Ulster Base
Two civilians were injured and dozens of homes and shops devastated by a suspected Irish Republican Army “human bomb” attack on a Northern Ireland army base, police said today.
A Protestant man was forced to drive a bomb-laden van to the Ulster Defense Regiment base at Magherafelt in County Londonderry on Sunday night. He managed to get out and raise the alarm minutes before the 500-pound bomb exploded.
His wife was held at gunpoint with a hood over her head and made to follow in a car to make sure her husband reached the target. The couple escaped unhurt.
Two civilians needed medical treatment. One of them, Albert White, 79, was at home recovering from a heart attack when the blast hit. His house was wrecked.
