Aztecs Net Big Upset Over Arizona

Unranked San Diego State made a bid Sunday for top-20 consideration by defeating No. 17 Arizona, 6-2, in a nonconference men’s tennis match.

The Aztecs’ biggest victory came at No. 1 singles as Ricardo Herrera defeated 10th-ranked Doug Livingston, 6-2, 6-0. Herrera, still unranked, also has beaten players ranked 11th and 18th in the nation.

Other singles winners for the Aztecs were Michael Sass, Kerry Safdie, Chris Numbers and Jeff Belloli. Doubles winners were Belloli and Dax Peterson, Herrera and Chris Numbers, and Sass and Joe McDonough.

SDSU is 1-1, Arizona 3-2.

Top-ranked Stanford defeated visiting University of San Diego, 8-1, in a nonconference match. J.J. Shobart scored USD’s only victory, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6, over Jason Yee. USD is 0-3.

BASEBALL

Cal State Los Angeles (3-2) scored four fourth-inning runs and scored a 6-2 victory over SDSU (1-2). The Aztecs entered with a 2-1 lead on Mike Shwartzer’s two-run double in the first inning, but Dave Johnston hit reliever Walt Bills’ first pitch for a three-run homer, pinning the loss on starter Rob Callaway (0-1). Scott Dennison went three-for-four with a double for SDSU.

Freshman Ed Crabtree went two for three with three RBIs, a home run and a double to lead U.S. International (1-4) over Chapman, 6-4. Mike Murphy also homered. Starter Eric Dietrich allowed three runs in the second inning and earned the victory. Chapman is 2-1.

A six-run second inning against Tom Cheek gave Fresno State (2-0) a 12-2 victory and a doubleheader sweep against USD (1-2). Dave Pingree’s two-run homer was the highlight of the Toreros’ 5-2 loss in the opener.
