Share

Pyewacket, a yacht skippered by Olympic gold medalist Robbie Haines, continues to hold a seven-mile lead in the 11th Biennial Marina del Rey-Puerto Vallarta Race as the fleet sailed past Cedros Island.

The wind picked up nicely for the third day and Pyewacket, owned by Roy E. Disney of California Yacht Club, was in position to challenge the course record, set by Joss in 1985. Pyewacket sailed 235 miles Saturday and needs to average 240 miles per day the rest of the way to set the record.

Joss, owned by Dick and Camille Daniels of Long Beach Yacht Club, is the leader in the PHRF class.

Climax, owned by Mike Campbell of Long Beach Yacht Club, leads the IOR Class B fleet, and Jano, owned by Robert M. Kahn of California Yacht Club, leads the IOR Class C fleet. The race covers about 1,125 nautical miles, making it the longest of the U.S.-Mexico races.
