Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif called Monday for a Gulf War cease-fire linked to a withdrawal by the warring parties.

Sharif said a cease-fire should be followed by the withdrawal of “all foreign forces” in the Gulf, adding that the countries of the region themselves must evolve an arrangement for their security.

Until the cease-fire, he said, the Islamic holy shrines in Saudi Arabia and Iraq should be declared peace zones.

Opening a debate in the National Assembly on the war, he offered a six-point peace plan.

Opposition parties and some of Sharif’s political allies were expected to demand the recall of about 11,000 troops that Pakistan has contributed to the U.S.-led multinational force in Saudi Arabia.

But Sharif rejected the demand beforehand, saying those making such a demand were doing no service to Pakistan.

His other proposals called for an emergency meeting of the 46-nation Islamic Conference Organization, a pan-Islamic force for peacekeeping after the cease-fire, and for implementation of U.N. resolutions on Palestine and the Himalayan region of Kashmir, subject of a dispute between India and Pakistan.
