Lebanon Troops Move Into South
Government troops moved into south Lebanon on Wednesday for the first time since 1975, taking up positions within sight of Israel’s self-declared security zone.
Witnesses said that about 2,500 soldiers in trucks and armored personnel carriers rumbled down the southern coastal highway between the ports of Sidon and Tyre.
The troop movements, cheered by thousands of Lebanese lining the streets, were part of the Syrian-backed government’s attempt to extend its authority across the country and to heal the wounds of 15 years of civil war.
