Jeweler Fined in False Advertising Case: A company that runs the fine jewelry departments in 17 Buffum’s department stores has agreed to pay $50,000 in civil penalties in a false advertising case. Orange County District Attorney Michael Capizzi said the Los Angeles jeweler, Mike Mendelson and Associates, allegedly advertised huge savings off regular prices, which were inflated in the ads to make the discounts look more attractive. Mendelson has denied any wrongdoing, while agreeing to pay the fine and to stop running the ads. An attorney for Mendelson said the company miscalculated the percentage savings between the regular prices and sale prices listed in the ad.
