BAGHDAD BOMBARDED: The allies pounded Iraq’s capital with bombs and missiles for 12 hours overnight. Iraqi officials said the raids killed 22 civilians and injured many more. Baghdad radio said Iraq “is waiting impatiently” for a ground war to begin.

FLEEING JETS DOWNED: Two allied F-15s shot down two Iraqi planes fleeing to Iran, said Marine Brig. Gen. Richard I. Neal in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He said two Iraqi SU-22s, and perhaps three, were shot down while flying to Iran.

BATTLESHIP IN ACTION: The battleship Wisconsin fired 11 rounds from its 16-inch guns at targets in Kuwait. It had previously fired its long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles at Iraqi targets.

AIRCRAFT LOSSES: A Navy F/A-18 fighter was lost in the northern Persian Gulf while returning to an aircraft carrier after a mission. Rescuers were searching for the pilot. A U.S. Army UH-1 Huey crashed from noncombat causes, killing one soldier and injuring four.

SCUD ATTACK: Iraq fired a long-range Scud missile at the Saudi capital, but the projectile was destroyed by Patriot defense missiles in a spectacular flash over the city. It was the first Scud attack since Saturday.

SLAIN BY TERRORISTS: A gunman killed an American civilian employed at an air base in Adana, Turkey, used for bombing raids on Iraq. A terrorist group said he was killed because of the Gulf War.

CASUALTIES REPORTED: France’s new defense minister, Pierre Joxe, said allied bombings have “certainly caused thousands of deaths” in Iraq, but he did not say if they were all military. U.S. officials haven’t provided Iraqi casualty figures.
