Randy Newman’s Anti-War Song

The Jan. 24 Calendar carried a story about a rather strange man named Randy Newman (“Drawing His Own ‘Lines in Sand,’ ” by Chuck Philips).

In his song “Lines in the Sand” Newman complains that “we old men will guide you, though we won’t be there beside you.” One of his “old men,” George Bush, was shot down two times in World War II so that anti-Americans like Newman could voice complaints even when we are at war. No, President Bush “won’t be there”--he has already been there.

I would rather not read about pantywaists such as Newman--but then my grandmother raised me on statements by people like Patrick Henry and Stephen Decatur (“my country right or wrong”). People like Patrick Henry only founded countries; they didn’t write pop music.
