Arcadia : Library to Apply for Funds

Share

The City Council was split last week on whether to pay part of the $16 million it will cost to construct a new building for the Arcadia Public Library.

On a 3-2 vote, the council gave the library the go-ahead to submit an application to the California State Library for matching funds. Mayor Mary B. Young and Councilman Charles Gilb voted against the plan, saying the city couldn’t afford its 35% share.

Agreement by the state to pay the other 65% under the Library Construction Bond Act would not obligate the city to build the library, city officials said.

Librarian Kent Ross said the 30-year-old library on West Duarte Road is obsolete. He said it has a shortage of electrical outlets, is not accessible to the handicapped, doesn’t meet earthquake standards, has few windows and needs more space for seating and materials.
